Never say a no, to yourself

Have you ever told yourself no?

No, this idea may not work. No, I may not be doing the right thing. No, this is not meant for me. No, I may not be able to make it this time.

“There is a vitality, a life force, energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of the time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.” - Martha Graham

I have several times said no to myself and felt the same way as Martha. Even before looking at the possibilities and opportunities the world has to offer, I said no. The last thing you do is take an answer as no from yourself. You should be the last person to tell yourself no, you can't.

Life is filled with trying times. But often it comes all down to what you make of it. It is not your job to judge your own work. It is not your place to compare it to others. It is not your responsibility to figure out how valuable it is or how useful it can be. You cannot say no to yourself.

To quote Pema Chodron, the Buddhist teacher, your job is to “come as you are.”

The trick is never to stop the first time you hear no. Negative feedback is a signal to adjust your idea, not to abandon it.

If you set your bar at “amazing,” it's awfully difficult to start. —Seth Godin

I was striving so hard for perfection that I forgot what my content actually stands for - real, honest, and raw-fully authentic. Ironically, the best way to make a better future is to truly embrace where you are now.

The courage to break free from the status quo and take one tiny step forward today, and then do it again tomorrow, is what I do.
